The "Valid" championship (part 1)

The adult Hockey World Championship in 2012 was held very smoothly and confidently for the Russian national team. Our team "took out" all its rivals step by step, leaving them no chance of success. It is not surprising that Russia won this championship, winning all its matches in regular time. At the World Youth Championship held from December 26 to January 5 for players under the age of 20, the Russian national team was completely different.

Each match was extremely difficult for our team, in 4 of the 7 matches played, the Russians brought things to overtime, lost hopelessly in one and managed to win one game in regular time, and with an advantage of only one abandoned puck. Only the Russians won the match against Germany 7-0, but the Germans scored a lot. Despite the constant "valid" matches, our hockey players still managed to win bronze medals, but let's remember the events of the youth championship in order, starting from the very first meeting.

In the first match, the Russians were opposed by the Slovak national team, which our hockey players should have easily beaten. But having led 2-0, the Russian guys apparently relaxed a little, which allowed the Slovaks to even the score at the end of the third period. It's good that defender Albert Yarullin managed to score the winning goal without bringing it to the shootout. They could have lost there.

In the next match, the Russians achieved the only victory in regular time in the championship. What is most interesting, our young hockey players won the USA national team with a score of 2:1, which then simply "tore up" all subsequent rivals and won the World Youth Championship.

In the final stage of the group stage, the Russians were opposed by the Canadians, and our team looked much weaker than its rivals. The representatives of the maple leaf country mockingly easily won 4-1, and could have won with a more significant advantage.

In the playoffs, everything went according to an even more complex plot with an ever-changing intrigue. The first match of the quarterfinals against Switzerland was almost the last for the Russian guys. Playing with a big advantage, the Russians managed to find themselves in the position of the losing side at the very end of the third period. Only the heroic efforts of striker Nikita Kucherov allowed our team to first equalize the score a minute and a half before the end of the third period, and then win a series of post-match shootouts.

In the semifinal meeting with the Swedes, who were the reigning world champions, it seemed that the scenario of the group stage match against the Canadians was being repeated. The Russian national team did absolutely nothing and 0:2 after the first period eloquently talked about it. But then our team seemed to be replaced, there were meaningful actions in attack, constant focus on the goal of the Swedes, which allowed the Russians to equalize the score and put the game into overtime. There were no goals scored here, and in the post-match shootouts, the Swedes again, like a year ago in the World Championship final, turned out to be stronger.

It seemed that the "valid" matches should end there and the Russian team would finally be able to show who was the boss in the third place match against Canada. Considering that the championship was held in Ufa, it seemed quite logical. In addition, in recent years, at the youth level, Russians have been constantly "beating" Canadians in decisive matches. bit qt
